[re]BLUR2.0

The topic
In the last three decades, significant changes have taken place in the world of design, including the context, material and technology. The "Past forward" Competition calls for an introspection of these development theoretically and formally by re-design the "BLUR BUILDING " by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. We re-define the blur as the conflict between physical reorganization and digital existence. The physical disturbance is achieved by refractions while the digital connection is achieved by Web 2.0 based iphone application.

Theoretically,
It is an initiative to help people nowadays to identify their physical presents from their digital lives.
It is a device with which people could discover the occupancy of the cybernetic part in their mind.
It is also an incubator that bring up the opportunities of encountering.

Formally,
It is a labyrinth built up with hundreds of the “water stalactites”.
It is a container within which there are unobvious boundary between illusion and reality.
It is also an experiment field where the refraction of lights is manipulated following the design of the continuous transparent surface.

[Revolv] _ Machina

We are proud to announce our entry for Robot Workshop Competiton /// suckerPUNCH daily has won the honorable mention. congratulations.

The building is a dynamic form embedded and responding to its context by slowly revolving as it moves social gathering spaces to workshop, classroom, and administrative spaces. The heavy duty work involving the utilization of 6-7 axis Kuka robots is maintained in an internal vortex which acts as the controlling spine of the envelope form. The facade is a multi-layered composite of zinc galvanized zinc panels paired with a memory responsive polymer. The MEP is embedded within the space frame where it acts along with the seasonal weather to actuate the responsive panels of the facade and allow natural ventilation within the building. Therefore the building is responsive to its internal programming as well as the external forces surrounding it. The peeling and local striated geometries are the result of the local conditions and culture of Brooklyn and the surrounding areas.

Quote:

carla LEITAO: A building that understands robots are in love with polymers. True, since the beginning they would like to become one.

simon KIM: The undulating envelope and internal tower that rotates is an interesting proposal. The patterned striations on the envelope denies a reading of the interior but promises an integrated mechanical system with polymer actuated cladding suspended in a spaceframe. The rotating tower situated within has no connection to the exterior unfortunately, to give meaning to a continually shifting programme in relation to fixed plates. This would have allowed an improvement on the tropes of singular shells and mechanized floors.

Eco-Terms

The process of ecology calls for a system of self-maintenance that all species, energy and substance keep a general balance. Adaptive, transitory and flexibility are all keywords to give a definition. For our human beings, the arbitrary of ruling everything for singular purpose shall give place to mutual benefits to all species evolved. It is an attitude of change. Rather than artificial mass-production scenarios, we need to efficiently take advantage of natures creations. Therefore, An ecological process is developed under these terms.
